MSAN Nokia Siemens Networks / MSAN NSN Configuration Guide

This article will describe about MSAN NSN (Nokia Siemens Networks), together with an explanation of its configuration.

MSAN (Multi-Service Access Network) is an access network device that serves multi-services, such as ASDL, SHDSL, E1, POTS, Ethernet. The MSAN topology itself is usually a stacking (multilevel) or master-slave architecture, which means the slave node is used as an extension of the master's hand.

If there are not enough master nodes then the slave will be used to increase the master capacity. Chassis and module are usually the same between master and slave. To do stacking, the uplink card is utilized as a module stack. The services offered by MSAN are modular and stick to the MSAN chassis. For example, one ASDL (or IP-ASDL) card has 48 ports so that 48 ASDL customers can subscribe at speeds of up to 24 Mbps downstream and 3.5 Mbps upstream.

From the type of FTTx family, MSAN itself is more accurately called FTTC (Fiber to the Curb) because services will be distributed to customers from node cabinets located on the side of the road to residential users via copper. So Fiber is terminated at the MSAN node.

CONFIGURATION COMMAND

PE-JUNIPER-SS> telnet 1.1.1.1 routing-instance VRF-MSAN
Trying 1.1.1.1...
Connected to 1.1.1.1.
Escape character is '^]'.

This time we will create a service with the requirement below :
  • Port facing to the modem is: Port 6/70
  • Port facing to the trunk (Metro/SW): Port 0/1
  • Service VLAN: 666
  • Management Modem VLAN: 31

First, we need to create a VLAN 31 for the management modem.

MSAN00-NSN# configure terminal
MSAN00-NSN(config)#
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# vlan create 31
Disable the port facing modem first, before we configuring the port.
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# port lre 6/70 disable
Then make configuration for service VLAN 666 for the customer
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# vlan create 666
Configure VPI and VCI for Services and Modems management
  • VPI 0 VCI 33 is for Modem Management
  • VPI 1 VCI 34 is for Services
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# lre 6/70 xdsl atm vcc 1 vpi 0 vci 33
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# lre 6/70 xdsl atm vc create vpi 1 vci 34
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# bridgeport 6/70/1 pvid 30
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# bridgeport 6/70/2 pvid 666
Tag Service VLAN and management VLAN to the Modem Port
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# vlan add 31 0/1 t
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# vlan add 31 6/70/1 u
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# vlan add 666 0/1 t
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# vlan add 666 6/70/2 u
Enable again the Modem Port on the MSAN
MSAN00-NSN(bridge)# port lre 6/70 enable.

SHOW COMMAND

To see customer VLAN or management Modem VLAN, we can use this Command in MSAN
MSAN00-NSN# show vlan 31
 |
VLAN ID | Ports (u: untagged port, t: tagged port)
 |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MSAN00-NSN# show vlan 666
 |
VLAN ID | Ports (u: untagged port, t: tagged port)
 |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 666 | 0/1t,6/70/2u
To check VPI/VCI, we can use this Command in MSAN
 MSAN00-NSN# show lre 6/70 xdsl atm vcctp-info

=====================================================================
  • SNR = 34,5 dB
  • Redaman = 13,4 dB
The maximum SNR value on this MSAN is 40 dB, which indicates that the network quality is very good. Between 18-30 dB indicates that the link is normal and running properly. Below 18 dB there is something that needs to check the network, whether the copper cable has a problem, or is there something causing the SNR to fall below.
